I take exception to being told that I was hijacking a thread, when, let's face it, most threads tend to veer off their original topic at some point !

As for the Daily Mail, it reports on the things that I am partially interested in, such as Immigration, House Prices, etc.

I say partially, because to the best of my knowledge, there is no paper that reports on a daily basis the industrial / goth music scene, board games, MMORPG's, alternative fashions in the BDSM scene, performance magic, PC gaming or astronomy, which interest me more.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Personally I prefer the Telegraph but if that's not available, I'd have the Independent or the Guardian over the Times any day - they at least have strong opinions and are not afraid to voice them.
Newspapers do change. Former Telegraph editor Peregrine Worsthorne famously said that he preferred the Guardian to the Independent because at least the Guardian had a soul, even if its politics were diametrically opposed to his; whereas the Independent was like a soulless statue. But it was young then.

        No: the Internet does that.

When I am working away I get the mail every day. my M.O. is to start reading and aim to get to the sodookio before I have had two pints, otherwise it gets too hard. After a hard day on the sql server thats usually 25-30 minutes
After the sodookio I scribble cash flow notes in the margins for the rest of the evening.

O often used to give these guys a cheery "f u c k off" on the way into the Student Union but find myself strangely more and more sympathetic to it now.

As for the Daily Mail. I think it adds as a useful badge on the kind of bigoted idiot that buys it.

I don't blame immigrants, but I do blame Labour for their bad immigration policies that are costing indigenous people their jobs and have increased the crime rate in leaps and bounds.
1 in 9 people in the uk was born outside the country and 2.6 million are non-EU workers while we have unemployment rising to 3.4 million in 2010. Even 10% of people in our prisons are foreigners.
When racial tension escalates over the next few years, we sure know who to blame.

I read the Guardian because the columnists and reporters take a more liberal left approach to a story than my default Tory mindset. This keeps me on my toes and ensures I don't drift to far to the right.

I agree about the Times. I don't like the Murdoch agenda, and I think he has tainted the editorial direction.

The Mail is hillarious, obessesed with the Royal family, immigrants and T'Labour party.
Seems strange that they blame immigration for all the countries Ills, yet they laud the biggest bunch of scrounging good for nothing foreigners we have (the Royals).
And how do they manage a story about Diana every weekend, when she's been dead for 12 years?
She's about as relevant to contemporary news as the JFK assassination (I wonder how long they ran that one for?)

That's not to say they don't know what they are doing. It's a finely tuned opium for the hard of thinking.

The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

Personally I despise the blaming of immigrants for all our issues, the poor journalism, lack of keeping to the facts and trying to put house prices in at every opportunity.

In fact, if the telegraph, times and independent are not available I would choose the guardian before the mail.
Totally agree. In fact I quite like the Guardian irrespective of the rest. Got no issues with the left, like to think I am a lib/con hybrid!

The Daily Wail gives middle england a bad name, and it almost preaches hate they way they blame immigrants for everything.

I get the Mail on Saturday because I like the separate TV guide. But the actual newspaper is dreadful and most of the headlines seem intent on stiring up hatred amongst the disgusteds of Tunbridge Wells.

I am currently using it for mopping up Nitromors paint sludge. Either that or it's lighting the woodburner.
