Among the scoffing, I came across the view from Spain, where it seems to me that El Mundo's reporting rose to the level of poetry:
Ocurrió anoche como por arte de magia. Londres se convirtió de repente en una ciudad blanca. Una ciudad onírica, penetrada de nieve, inerme ante la peor ventisca en varias décadas.
El hombre del tiempo había anunciado nieve para este lunes, pero la dama blanca adelantó unas horas su llegada dejando un rastro de postal en la madrugada del lunes y vapuleando esta mañana la vuelta al trabajo. Era un placer extraño deambular ayer por la pasarela de Charing Cross, divisar el Big Ben entre la niebla con un casquete blanco, pisar una nieve todavía virgen que la prisa convertiría en unas horas en una peligrosa mezcla de hielo y barro.
En Londres casi nunca nieva. La última gran nevada ocurrió hace 18 años. Todos los años hay un día en el que caen un puñado de copos, pero esta vez todo ha sido diferente. Han echado la trapa decenas de escuelas, los trenes van a pedales, han cerrado varias líneas de metro y los autobuses rojos de Londres se han quedado esta mañana en cocheras. Según la explicación oficial, para evitar accidentes y problemas de tráfico.
Los aeropuertos han sucumbido también a la tormenta: Luton y City han cerrado y en Heathrow, Gatwick y Stansted los vuelos salen con retraso o se cancelan.
Cientos de empleados se han quedado atrapados en el extrarradio y quienes estaban de guardia en los hospitales han tenido que extender sus turnos al no llegar a la hora el relevo de sus colegas.
Ahora correrán ríos de tinta sobre el caos circulatorio y se espera que llegue más nieve entre hoy y mañana. Pero uno prefiere quedarse con la estampa de anoche. La nieve cayendo a plomo en los embarcaderos del Támesis. La cúpula de St. Paul emergiendo orgullosa entre la niebla. La ciudad envuelta en una paz irreal y solitaria.Comment
