      Never go for the second cheapest 'non-house' wine on the list. It's one of the oldest restaurant psychology tricks in the book. It's always the one they make the most mark up on and is usualy utter sh1te! Similarly, never go for the 'cicken breast' option on the menu - they make loads on that.

      This comes from a friend who is a fairly well known chef.

        It should be a good night , I booked it ages ago, I didn't really know what I was booking but it looks quite good actually. The menu looks tasty, I've already picked what I'm having,

        Starter
        Ravioli of Scottish lobster and salmon, lemongrass and coconut bisque

        Main
        Rump of Cumbrian lamb stuffed with anchovies, broccoli, capers and almond fricassée

        Pudding
        Cold Valrhona chocolate fondant, banana and passion fruit sorbet

        Full menu >

        I hope its good, I've been to other so called good places and have been disapointed.

            If you're trying to save money old chap, you really shouldn't be at Claridges, however if you're on a budget for a general white I'd go for the Sancerre Henri Bourgeois (183) at £40 or the Pouilly Fume at £36. For a general purpose red it's got to be the Crozes Hermitage Domain Fayolle at £42.50. It all depends what you order to eat though. Wine is all a matter of personal taste so what I like is probably not what others would pick.

            And yes, white with fish and red with meat is the general rule.

            Edited - just seen the menu you've posted....Glass of house white with the starter and a bottle of the Crozes Hermitage should do the trick.

              Bumfluff, can I just say....be very careful about the expectations you set early on in a relationship. Make sure this lady knows that this kind of posh venue is a massive treat for you too - one that you're sharing with her. Make her see that this isn't the kind of restaraunt you will be taking her to every week...else you'll just get yourself another lass who sees you as Mr MoneyBags.

              You're worth more than that, and there are plenty of girls out there who'd like to spend the night having pizza and playing scrabble with you.

              FWIW.

                I would take a good red with that. Possibly a fruity one since you have a lot of sweet flavours in your dishes.

                    Having stayed at the vineyard (British owners) and having had their wines for the last few years (although they have had recent problems with the previously excellent rosé) I can recommend this for a white meat, fish or just getting plain p*ssed It made an excellent accompaniment to the enormous salmon we devoured on Xmas Eve

                      Freshwater fish;
                      1218 Riesling Spätlese Trocken, August Kesseler, Rheingau 2001 50.00

                      Sea fish;
                      1230 Vino Verde, Quinta De San Joanne 2007 25.00

                      Red Meat;
                      1280 Ribera del Duero, Resalte, crianza 2001 50.00
                      or
                      1436 Massaya, Gold Reserve, Bekaa Valley 2004 65.00 (Lebanon; fantastic wines, sensible prices)

                      Anyway, his prices are very heavily marked up. He's charging 50 quid for a Barbera that I've got from my local wine dealer in NL at 8 euros.

                      OK, put a big margin on it, but the food had better be f**king brilliant.
