    Well having had the service for 3 hours , I get on average 150 kbps. ( that is very low ) . That is for an offering of 4 Mbps service. The guy told me it needs few hours to adjust , but I have a gut feeling that I landed on a HUGE tulip.

      It's the training period, it will connect and sync at different speeds in order to find your maximum stable sync rate, they all do this with ADSL MAX.

      All kinds of things can affect speed, I have a very poor line that won't handle ADSL MAX at all, IDNET are one of the few that still offered a fixed rate 2meg service which is the only option for me. Orange just migrated me to MAX and left me out to dry when it didn't work.

      If you're still getting crap speeds later on then it’s more likely to be BT's fault as IDNET don't throttle or shape traffic like almost every other ISP, if it is BT then you'll get crap speed no mater who you're with. The stats on thinkbroadband.com aren't made up you know.

          At one time if you were getting poor ADSL speeds you could nag BT into cranking up the line capacitance (sic - not capacity).

          Not sure of the technical details, but presumably this is something BT are generally keen to minimize for one reason or another.

            BT couldn't care less, I can't remember the exact detail but I think they're legally obliged to provide a data speed of 14kbps or something ridiculous, I've had them out 3 times to try and fix my erratic SNR.

            I've also been warned that if I push too hard they have a right to deem my line as not suitable for broadband so I won't be able to get even a basic 512kbps service.

            All this while Virgin roll out 50Mbps.

            Saying all that I’ve been running routerstats tonight and my SNR looks pretty good and I’ve been up for over a week which is a personal best!
