I would suggest you made the most of the chances that were available to all.

My dad was a screw, my mum cleaned houses, we never owned our own house. I'm doing alright because I got off my arse and made sure I did alright.
No one else is going to do it for me so I don't have a lot of sympathy for the feckless.

I'm sure some liberal will be along in a minute to call me right wing...
    Older and ...well, just older!!

My wife did some lecturing a few years back, and ended up with a group of girls from this area of Glasgow on day release from school sent to local college. They had all told her, without exception, that their two aims in life were:

        1) Have a baby by the time they were 16
        2) Get a council house and "live off the dole"

It saddens me, it really does, that there are children being brought up with such low expectations, but its just one of those cycles that feeds on itself. The parents do it, so the kids do, and in future their kids do it...there's just no motivation to improve and break out.

Mind you, when I asked my oldest what she wanted to do when she grows up, she said she wants to be "a televisioner". A little prodding revealed that this job involves "switching on the television and looking at the pictures". Then again she's only four so I think there's still time to raise the bar a little.

        "Keep them at 24,000"
        "No, feet"

...so am I, but only moderately so, and I'm liberal too (classical liberal if you like).

I know of plenty who pissed away their lives doing nowt, or, in the case of the females, got knocked-up ASAP and got the Star Prize of a nice little house. The worthless scum.

Danger! People are posting sensible reasoned arguments.

If the middle classes are driven to poverty and desperation by the current economic shambles, will we all have an immediate answer to the problems of poverty and deprivation? I ask because we all seem to know how this woman in Glasgow should have improved her circumstances, but will our education and our nice accents and good taste really help us if we end up impoverished by some wbanker’s hubris?

Actually thats a valid point. I was watching the news last night and the article was about increasing the cost of utilities so that we meet stricted carbon emission targets. It was stated financial assistance will be there to ensure the lower earners do not pay more for it.

The implication here is that the middle to high earners will pay for it, as they will pay for any other govt sponsored action which costs money. I'm all for fairness but there'll come a time when it's taking the p*ss...

Since this thread is verging on sensible debate, I thought I'd chuck in this quote from the article

"All my pals are looking for work as well. But it's not that easy to get a job straightaway, you've got to write out your CV and everything and then hand it in to places"

Pah, those bloody right wing bar stewards and their complex barriers to entry. It's a closed shop I tells ya.
