Thatcher had to start with a big tax bite, until her other money-making schemes got under way:
    1. sell off the family silver.
    2. wait for the oil revenues to roll in (1980s not 1970s: Labour invested in oil extraction but didn't see the benefits).

Lucky for her she had a good war to keep her in power, without it she would have been out after 1 term for what she was already doing to the country.

Yes, I remember what the early 1980s were like.

She had to raise taxes to pay off massive debts left by the outgoing Labour government. Can anybody really deny that Cameron will need to repeat this feat in 2010 if he is unlucky enough to be saddled with power ?

Will Labour have paid off those massive debts by 2010, Expat ?

If you made any worth responding to someone might. You keep repeating the same mantra that has been answered before but you refuse to listen.

Selling off the family silver would be a one shot policy. The revenue would not last long enough to give the above graph.

Oil. The revenue has kept coming in yet NL seem to be continuing to raise tax. So what is their excuse?

Of the stuff Maggie sold how many were costing the taxpayer to subsidise?

BTW I am not a Thatcherite. I think she had no right selling a lot of what she did and I think she should have done more for British industry so do not try labelling me as a true blue.
I just want to hear your supporting arguments for your monotonous drone. You are as 1 track as Cyber.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

Tax freedom day has been latest under Tory rule. The reasons for that are debatable, but obviously if you are a Tory it makes sense to blame Labour or world conditions or anything else. It does seem that they have rolled it back some times, but if it wasn't their fault it got later, how can they claim the credit for when it gets earlier?

Who was John Major clearing up from when he took us in the 90s recession?
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

We are still clearing up from Maggie's Mess (tm).

Tomorrow belongs to me, as they say.

I just had to laugh!! Today, an embittered Northerner rang Gaunty on Talksport to complain that he is out of work due to Thatcher. Gaunty laughed at him, saying 'so you still blame Thatcher because you are unemployed 17 years later'....................'Grow up!!'.

If there are massive debts on handover to Cameron that have to be repaid, that is due to Labour. Tax freedom day will naturally extend. Will you then debate the reasons, or accept that it is due to economic mismanagement yet again by Labour ?

I'll accept that the handing over of a big deficit to Cameron was due to economic mismanagement by Labour. Now I invite you once again to account for the tax rises imposed by John Major, and why Labour inherited a deficit in 1997.
