New Labour are the arsonists, the house is an inferno, and now they are rushing in with the fire extinguishers, blaming the lack of smoke alarms and careless tenants.

And worst of all, Joe Public (being thick as pig tulip), can't see through it.

Agreed. They could have been wealth-creating, but wild-cat strikes, unrealistic pay demands, and unwillingness to do a fair day's work for a fair day's pay in the 70s, unfortunately put paid to most of our car and mining industry.

Our mining industry survived. The miners didn't. Budge bought up most of the mines and kept the productive ones going. The North Yorkshire ones were producing record amounts with modern equipment.

I worked for a mining machinery company in the late 90s.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

WHS. The UK has, probably, the best quality coal on the planet... and we let it stay underground whilst we ship in crap from South America.

When it comes at a 10th of the price, is it really any wonder.

The green aspect seems ... er ... a bit dubious.

Is coal a 'green' fuel ?

Can be. Depends on how it's mined and then used. South American exporters are not renowned for their planet-friendly coal mining/human rights/anything practices. Oh, and then it's all bunged onto a boat and sailed around the world.

.... how it's used is irrelevant. We're talking about origins and cost. The bottom line is that pensioners/low paid need affordable fuel and the unions made it unaffordable and also regularly interrupted supplies with strikes.
They cut their own throats, and we had to look for alternative methods of power to break a monopoly situation. Well done Maggie!!
