Its amazing how many agents try this old chestnut about references. When you get the agent down the pub (on them of course) they say its amazing how many naiive contractors actually give them the references, and say if they're stupid enough to do it they will keep trying it on.
I feel you do have to be falsely nice back to them, so I simply send them a reference of a job I did in Australia or somewhere similar which is no use to them, or send them a reference I have blanked out the contact details on.
Suffice to say you dont usually here back from them, winkers
2 so far this morning. My politeness is wearing thin, and its not even lunch
They all start with "we work differently here at insert daffodils name in that we dont put u forward until we have references so that the client can be..... etc" to which i always reply (politely) "your not working any differently to the other phone calls i've had from agents asking for references up front and i'll tell you exactly what i tell them.... ****** *** ** ******** ********* *** ** ******** *** ** ** ****** *** ** ******** *** *** ** ******** *** *** ** ******** *** *** ** ******** *** *** ** ******** *** *** ** ******** *** *** ** ******** *** *** ** ******** *** *** ** ******** *** *** ** ******** *** *** ** ******** *** *** ** ******** ***"
Hey that's an idea - I must try switching to morse code myself next time an agent asks for "references". I bet not many of them know it, and they'll have no option but to put down the phone.
