There seems to be a counterpart to the Village Idiots Club - the Walter Mitty club - it's members know who they are.

What's wrong with COBOL and Fortran anyway - good honest languages.
I used to enjoy COBOL. With a decent editor and a scripting language "COBOL writer's cramp" can be a thing of the past.

I too fancy a change, but not academia for me. Something with time spent outdoors sounds attractive, preferably in a spot with decent weather please.

i used to specialise in further + higher education as a permie (VLEs and all that). work was great, treated very well (ie like an adult), loads of freedom, listened to by senior management, given cutting edge tech to play with, relaxed environment, conferences, travel, working with really smart committed people, knowing that you're contributing rather more to humanity than if you're cutting code for, say, BAE systems.....and yes, the annual totty influx is entertaining too.

            absolutely terrible money though!

Yes but anything is more expensive than drinking yer pints of bitter with your fellow smelly old geezers at the Dog and Bone in Swindon Council Estate.

so, so, so wide of the mark, but quite revealing nonetheless DP.
