I've got an IBM Thinkpad T42 using WEP.

Anyone know if this is upgradable to support WPA - I tried searching for this a while back but couldn't conclude anything.

AIUI it is a function of the router and the laptop's OS, i.e. presuming Win XP, yes it supports it.

voodooflux, thanks, I'll check again (website says WEP).

MAC address filtering is a waste of time.
If they are war driving they will know how to bypass it quicker than you can set it up.

All this technical talk is very interesting but why did you not advise your neighbour to call the police? It's a criminal offence for which you can be arrested...

Have you ever called the police for something that doesn't involve murder, firearms or motoring offences.
Anything else they send a beat officer around the next day. total waste of time.
+ they were foreigners (ex eastern block) police would have given up as soon as they were answered in a foreign tongue, and told them to move on.
              Why bother?

You just need to tell them there's some contractors outside avoiding tax and they'll be round like a shot...

Why not put bananas in the exhaust pipe? That would have prevented the getaway upon calling the law
