I am a young mariner headed to war
I'm thinkin' 'bout my family
and what it was for
There's water on the wood
and the sails feel good
And when I get to shore
I hope that I can kill good.
My father was a sailor
named Captain Kennedy
He lost his wooden schooner
to the Germans on the sea
Exploded on the water
for everyone to see
And humiliate that American
Captain Kennedy.
I saw him in Nassau in 1971
His strength was failin'
but he still ran a run
He worked 'til his fingers
wore to the bone
To buy that wooden schooner
and sail on his own.
He was known in the islands
as hundred foot iron
That steel hull freighter
was passin' its time
And time flew by faster
with life on the sea
And the days grew shorter
for Captain Kennedy.

Damned if I know that one - given the depressing tone of the lyrics I would moot the old crooner Mr L Cohen - but just a wild guess.

Googled it. Was suprised by the answer actually as I wouldn't have come close to guessing that.
If you dont know the album in question it is a bit of a tour de force - I didnt care much for the rest of the bands albums save one other - there you have it.

Hard Luck Moose - another clue - they are/were very much an English 'progressive' Band - though I did see Wishbone Ash with the Jam at a festival in Loch Lomond - impressive rendition of the Phoneix I recall.
When the sun beats down and I lie on the bench
I can always hear them talk ...
it's from early80's iirc. artist released album and during promotion repeatedly voiced his support for ronald reagan's policies. he's always veered from one thing to another. a recent release was all for impeaching the president. damn - i've said too much.
