I've been doing the same research recently, not finished yet but here's what I've gleaned so far (don't shoot me if I've missed something)
- LCD use less power than Plasma, but the picture isn't as good generally. But LCD is better if you're gaming. Plasma is usually more expensive as well.
- For LCD the refresh rate should be <10ms where possible
- Contrast ratio should be no less than about 1:15000 (determines the range of colour that can be displayed.)
- Multiple HDMI inputs for all those Hi-def gadgets you'll no doubt be buying with your millions. SCART is only for legacy analogue devices (e.g. PS2.) Plus also a USB or card reader if you want to bore people with your holiday photos.
- Must say "Hi-def ready" (beware of similar-sounding titles apparently.)
- Errr.... that's all I can remember.
I quite fancy one of these LCD's, as they don't look quite so shiny plastic... http://www.johnlewis.com/230500549/P...erm=KDL32E4000

Tensai,
thank you very very much, this is what I needed.
I'm leaning towards a Sony too.
Thanks, much appreciated,
Milan.
p.s. you see, this is the kind of response that the likes of Sas are simply not capable of, a, because they know nout and b, because they don't have the required interpersonal communication skills and understanding of humanity to deal with such situations which just about explains why they are where they are and why they will never get to own and drive at will a Passat.Comment

After lots of research I eventually bought a 37" Samsung. Decent write ups etc, looked OK trying it with various things.
Its main source in terrestrial digital - it has a built in decoder.
In some things it's great, others crap. XBOS is great. New DVD's are excellent, new TV programmes are excellent too.
Anything that is a bit old is pretty dire. Lot's of ghosting round movement, characters. The channel 4 logo is particularly bad. Cleary the decoding isn't necessarily great depending upon the media source.
So, whatever you device, try and play a selection of media through it first. Also watch some things that move quickly.
Of course mine is a few months old now so no doubt hopelessly out of date....Comment

Tensai,
I agree with you about the look of the Sony,
I think the shiny black ones which are soooooo cool today will look like old cack in a couple of years
