I'm rather partial to Malbec at the moment.
I did some work for a major wine merchants (it was a terrible hardship I know) some years ago and spent quite a lot of time with one of their wine buyers. I make no claims to being a wine expert, but for the last 1.5 decades I've followed his advice.
Buy from supermarkets as they have massive buying power and get good wine cheaply so sell it cheap
Try lots of different makers, grapes, countries of origin and types until you find things you particularly like
Pay no more than £6 for a bottle (15 years ago it was £4 but wine prices have dropped a fair bit in real terms)
Screw tops rather than corks, apparently corks cause more spoiled wine than almost anything else
Don't be scared of plastic bottles
Avoid snobbiness, snob factor counts for bugger all, a good wine doesn't have to have a flash label or cost a lot to be good
Don't drink a particularly good wine after you've had a few drinks as you won't appreciate it since the alcohol already drunk cocks up your sense of taste
I've been very pleased with the results and found loads of wines that I like.Comment

I used to take a bottle of wine home each evening for the Mrs;
She was happy when I brought a Claret.
She was over-joyed when I brought a Reisling.
You should have seen her face when I came home with a semillon.

I used to be a fan of Chateuneuf Du Pape, but I can't seem to buy a decent one these days (I've no idea what years are good for this stuff).
Barolo is definately my new honey, thanks to Waitrose Special Cellar - I think it was the 2000 which was absolutely out of this world!!! (Although I've had a few 2003's lately too - they're nice enough.)
The 2000 - ah man, seriously....you know when you have really special chocolate and you only actually need a couple of bits to satisfy you instead of a whole box? Well it was like that.
Me and my lad stuggled to sup the bottle, and we can really drink! It was just absolutely gorgeous.The pope is a tard.Comment
