But in student days, coupled with no money you had no responsibilities - rent, enough food for 1, clothes and as much beer as you could afford. Now saddled with a mortgage and commitments I'd say I'm happier with money than without it. If I didn't have money but had the same commitments I'd be soooo much more miserable than I am now.
Rule Number 1 - Assuming that you have a valid contract in place always try to get your poo onto your timesheet, provided that the timesheet is valid for your current contract and covers the period of time that you are billing for.

    I preferred version 1!

That, and the money. Plus the fact that I'm a misanthropic git drifting into a bitter twisted midlife crisis.

flip, I need to stop doing something for a while.

I agree. Though it's fair to say I've never had the social life I did as a student, everything else about real life has been much better. And the student social life mainly consisted of hanging around with friends talking about how miserable we all were, because we couldn't afford to do anything else.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

Hmmnm I'm guessing you weren't Mr life and soul of the party then?
Eeyore was very glad to be able to stop thinking for a little, in order to say "How do you do" in a gloomy manner to Pooh.
"And how are you?" said Winnie-the-Pooh.
Eeyore shook his head from side to side. "Not very how," he said. "I don't seem to felt at all how for a long time."

Actually I was far more frivolous with my cash than now, looking back with a hazy red glow (ok ok it's not long ago) I had more disposable cash than in a permie role! Admittedly most of that cash belonged to the bank!
