Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson -
More on Thorium
(The average Westerner uses around 120 kWh/day inclusive of everything)An alternative nuclear reactor for Thorium, the ‘energy amplifier’ proposed by Rubbia et al. [1995], would, they estimated, convert 6 million tonnes of thorium to 15 000 TWy of energy, or 60 kWh/d/person over 1000 years. Rubbia et al. [1995] argue additionally that, in due course, many times more thorium would be economically extractable than the current 6 million tonnes. If their suggestion – 300 times more – is correct, then Thorium and the energy amplifier offer 300 kWh/d/person over 60 000 years.

Energy crisis, what energy crisis. Just need boffins to pull their fingers out is all. Once upon a time the UK would be leading the world in stuff like this. Nowadays they can't even be trusted to respond to safety alarms properly, leaving that to accountants.Comment

One way to appease the NIMBYs is to put one in everybody's backyard. I.e. a mini nuclear reactor per house. Install once, with enough material to provide power for the lifetime of the house, and in one swoop you've solved all the energy problems. You could dismantle the national grid.
And nobody need worry about statiscal increases in instances of Lukemia around power stations, as there'll be increased instances of Lukemia everywhere. Will work inside IR35. Or for food.Comment

A pebble-bed in every garden? As you say, dismantle the Grid. Eliminate terrorism risk. Recharge your own electric vehicle.Originally posted by VectraMan View PostOne way to appease the NIMBYs is to put one in everybody's backyard. I.e. a mini nuclear reactor per house.
