Did they charge more if the view outside a window was nice?Originally posted by BrowneIssue View PostIt was called the Window Tax

The reason for taxing windows was that they are visible from outside - It has always been unconstitutional in Britain for officers of the crown or their assignees to demand entrance to law abiding peoples' dwellings without a search warrant granted on good grounds (except in civil emergencies or war time).Originally posted by BrowneIssue View PostIt was called the Window Tax and resulted in people bricking up their windows. Pitt's Portraits, they were called, the bricked-up windows.
Parliament in the mid 18th century (the time when that quote was made in a commons speech) would never have sanctioned council tax valuations with inspectors snooping about inside private properties and even taking photos.
