A similar story for my parents. Something like 2K circa 1955, though bumped this up with a detached house in 1970, paid off in about 1980. 1970's inflation did help a lot there.

One thing about the 1950s was that they apparently couldn't get a mortgage for a pre-war house which is what they would have preferred. Cash was the order of the day for those, which meant that the relative palace with a super posh address that my uncle had was only something like 3K.

Im 25 and do not have 5k at my disposal unfortunately so I asked a simple question.
Then you should have been clearer.

          You said

"does it have to be for home improvements"

          "Do they check"

I can't be the only person who thought that you wanted to use it for something "risky"

            £5K

An equity release loan to raise £5K

Is everyone in this country so much in hock that they have no savings whatsoever?

I just spent £25,000 of my savings on doing the new house up.
If I'd known I was going to saw my hand off, I would have got a loan with a payment protection plan
Confusion is a natural state of being

Oh so, you're not the infamous RRH who pretended he'd died and issued an apology on YouTube then?

Glad we got that cleared up.

                      Apologies.

Btw, if you're charging upwards of £600 for a garden gate you should be rolling in money.
