We have more to worry about with the Russkis at the moment, the Chinese have always been at odds with the Russkis, they have always feared them as much , if not more, than we do.
I am not an expert but I would guess any build up is more defensive than aggressive, and more likely pointing east, not west.
The Chinese have never sought an empire, they already have one
what they have done, and brilliantly well, is to set their opponents at each others throats, and to win via diplomacy, trade and patience.
