The metro link goes as far south into cheshire as Altrincham, any further south and public transport is a joke.
If I were looking for somewhere nice to rent in the city I'd look at the Northern quarter. Not too well up on ther areas further north of manchester, but many areas north of the city are best avoided, with the expception of places like Prestwich.
