You can start work without clearance, you just need an escort. Most security clearance shops are used to this and will be able to get somebody working on something similar to you to act as an escort.

It's good fun when you need to go to the bogs or get a coffee when they are located on a different floor.
If there are a few of you awaiting clearance suggest that the Prog office cabin boy does the coffee run for you all on demand, will save a heap of time
... obviously won't work for the bog run though...

It depends on the client, I was marched off site at BAE whilst waiting even though I had been working alongside SC cleared people who were happy to escort me, when I was working at the doughnut in Cheltenham I needed a minimum of SC just to get on site with an escort.
