VW, Audi, Saab maybe for the helpdesk level guys but after that surely we should be into Beemers and Mercs as entry level?

    Where's your self respect?
    Well I wouldn't mind driving around a new Nissan GT-R or a 350Z......

It looks as if the Mondeo will be resuscitated. The garage has confirmed that the CAM belt has gone, but will not do the job, and has given me the name of an engineering firm instead. These guys say they can do it and estimate the cost to be between $500 and £800 to repair. He sounded a touch dodgy on the phone (and didn’t ask for the age of the car) but I’m going to give this engineering firm a punt.

Anyone care to place a bet on where in that price range the price will end up, and whether the car will be fixable / driveable?

Just scr-a-p it and buy another one. Much easier and probably safe than bodge-it-and-scarper "fixing" the engine.

You’re probably right, but at least I know everything else works on this car; it has a long MOT, good tires (and new wipers!), working radio etc. I’m not sure what I’d get for £800, it’s been a long time since I’ve looked at other cars.

Oi! I'm rather taken with my A4 ta very much, and I am weeeeeelll past the helpdesk days (thanks God)

Unfortunately just found the our shiny new double buggy won't fit in the dearly beloved's Y-reg Fiesta but WILL fit in my Audi, so guess what I'm going to be driving in a few weeks

I had a rover (spit) blow up on me and had it rebuilt. Biggest waste of money ever. Thing burnt more oil than petrol within a year.

How much is your mondeo actually worth?

You should get a pretty decent Mondy for 800 quid these days. Why not keep the old one for spares and buy a new "runner"?

I've had my 500 quid Sierra for over two years now, done nearly 25k in her. She's been a little gem

In its present condition, little or nothing. To someone else, working, about the cost of the repair bill I expect. To me, about £2000 working I suppose, not knowing what a 13 year old Modeo is worth.

I think you are down into £500-800 category at 13 years old. If you can get the engine going for £500 and the rest of the car is Ok it might be worth it if you still want a banger. You could spend a grand on a 'new' banger one and it won't last two minutes. A lad at work just went banger shopping at an auction and he said it was quite a sight looking at the trail of broken down cars ( some smoking ! ) as people tried to drive them home.
