The fact is though, if carp jobs paid better, more of the indigenous population would be willing to do them. Cheap immigrants exasperate the situation. I pity the poor sods having to compete against those impossible odds.
If the Benefits system paid less than crap jobs, more of the indigenous population would be willing to do them.

The problem is that everybody seems to think that a Flat Panel TV, PVR, DVD, Microwave, Computer, and a Games Console, random holiday in the sun is a right that everybody should have these days.
If you actually just had the things that you needed to survive (i.e. a place to sleep, a place to wash/tulip and a place to cook along with food and clothing) you could easily pay for it with the wage from a crap job.
The problem is that surviving is not good enough any more, people expect the luxuries too.
maybe you don't see the above as a luxery, but when you have nothing and can't afford to do anything but survive that is what they are.

Getting better.
I particularly enjoyed the inclusion in this updated list of that modern-day luxury item - the microwave.
The fact remains that the problem is not with the Pole, the problem is with the workshy chav.
I'm not sure I agree totally with that statement
An awful lot of European immigrants have bought craft skills over -i.e. the builders and plumbers - these compete directly with skilled UK workers for custom. At the moment a 10 year housing boom has meant there is plenty of work to go round so the effect on UK born craftsmen has been masked. Now that this appears to be ending it will be interesting to see the effects of an enlarged labour pool competing for a reducing work base.
There are also unskilled immigrants who are the real competitors with the work-shy chavs and have mainly gone for the minimum wage jobs - the only way these can afford to exist in the UK is in subsidised housing (usually farming) or multiple occupancy bed sits a-la-AtW.
Usually Governments could put in place policies which would encourage our native underclass to take low paid jobs with tax incentives or training courses to upskill - with the arrival of so many migrant unskilled this is no longer a viable option.
Both groups are remitting huge amounts back home rather than spending the cash locally (£9 billion p.a. in the case of the Poles)
The other real scandal is that added to EU migration 70% of migrants originate from outside of the UK
The situation is now also changing for skilled/managerial workers, as of this month employees are free to trawl around the world for a position paying +40k without advertising the posts in the UK first. In the last downturn in 2002/3 we saw many on this site forced onto the bench, every site I have worked on since then has seen an increasing % non-UK native employee as a result of the amount of FTV's issued - I cannot see how it is going to be better next time
IMHO we appear to be heading for a perfect storm for employment in the UK:
No point in getting off benefits because you will currently not earn more than staying at home with no respite in sight
No point in taking on apprentices as lower cost migrants will provide the labour
No point in running a plumbing / building business because the migrants will undercut you
No point in getting into debt going to Uni because all the professions will be filled with white collar migrants or off shored
As crusty says it's hard to see how any of this benefits the non migrant UK population, but things will no doubt get interesting once a recession occurs
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think
