will just say I remember some madman banging my window and left him to it, and deny all knowledge of even seeing him
I wouldn't say that.
It's tantamount to admitting that you were therefore driving without due care and attention if you didn't see the alleged victim.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

But, admits that I was in the area. If I say I never seen him, which is reasonable since he got in the way of the car then puts me in a better position I reckon.
As he came to my window 500 yards from where I alledgedly hit him I can safely not relate the two incidents, hence doing the sensible thing driivng away from a looney banging at my window about to get knocked over by a truck!!
Well, I had no idea I ran over his foot, and it is his own fault, so not feleing guity at all.
Let him try and prove that you were there, don't admit to anything. He could show you an x-ray of a flat foot and in court you can say "Yes I agree that Mr X can prove that his foot has been damaged, but I fail to any proof that it was me that did it."
If the police ask you just say you have no recolection of what you were doing on that day, saying nothing is fine, saying you didn't do it could come back to bite you.

Saying nothing is far far better. The babylon will twist everything you say...
