Spurs fans call themselves yids for the same reasons that black people in the US adopted the N word. It was a term used as an insult which they appropriated. It's perfectly acceptable slang, I have mates who call themselves yids.
The term is often interpreted as offensive by non Jews, which is a major misconception. The word Yiddish is not offensive, so neither is Yid
