AtW - your car analogy is flawed.
The UK has lots of car makers (now some owned abroad unfortunately);
TVR
Lotus
Morgan
Caterham
I can't be bothered to google for the rest.
Successive UK governments have made the UK financial services industry one of the best in the world, hence the giant bonus levels.
Most of these folk pay tax here, and contribute to the UK economy so what's the problem?"See, you think I give a tulip. Wrong. In fact, while you talk, I'm thinking; How can I give less of a tulip? That's why I look interested."Comment

And how many cars they make altogether? Probably less than one shift of Ford.Originally posted by Moscow Mule View PostThe UK has lots of car makers (now some owned abroad unfortunately);

Cars analogy is valid in my view, considering how successful Japanese, German, French, Italian, American cars are.
Why it fails in the UK? Many reasons, but one big is that the Govt here focuses on the City way too much.Comment

So mass-production = best? I disagree.Originally posted by AtW View PostAnd how many cars they make altogether? Probably less than one shift of Ford.

That said UK car makers make a quality hand-built product in the best traditions of UK manufacturing, which is exported all over the world."See, you think I give a tulip. Wrong. In fact, while you talk, I'm thinking; How can I give less of a tulip? That's why I look interested."Comment

Shouldn't you be more concerned with making the UK No.1 for search technology?
Stop worrying about the City, markets etc and bring me the head of Google on a plate!Comment

Morgan and Caterham make the kind of kit cars that are more appropriate for 1907 than 2007. Some crazy people do buy them, but this market is very small.
Lotus - ok, some cars are nice. I think they don't make their own engines, that's big part of a car.
You forgot Noble - good cars, engines are not theirs though, but fine.
Now compare these companies with Porsche: a lot more cars they make, and expensive too, but people buy them.Comment
