Oh yes, guv, we're poor but we're happy. Sucker.
There are some studies that suggest that happiness and contentment is almost inversely proportional to income. Not so sure about relationship to wealth though.

The general jist of them is that once you are earning a bit more than is required for essentials the enjoyment of earning more above this is outweighed by the stresses placed on work/life balance.

And that's because they are all stressed out. The health of some employee's, for clients I've worked for in the south, was really shocking. Feet tapping, eye rolling, I know it may sound stupid to read however some of the folks I remember were a bubble wrap pop from a full mental breakdown. Support the kids not doubt, the mortgage, all under an unrealistic salary, working for a boss who had as much foresight as a blind hedgehog in the headlights. I've seen it to much, pressure pressure do this do that by yesterday, it's not healthy. It may be the presenteeism culture but it does not mean it's right. I was always stressed when I was a permy, struggling to pay bills etc but since I've been contracting I have chilled right out and not worried about anything at all, I have resisted going for more high profile roles to avoid the additional stress you mention.

Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

If that was possible, you wouldn't still have the medieval leasehold system.

Ah, 'James' - now that is a blast from the past. They had some great tracks, 'Born of Frustration', Say Something', 'Sometimes', 'Laid'...

Enjoyed their stuff for a while until I heard the rumour, no idea whether it was true, that 'James' sold more t-shirts than albums, due to the idiot UK student population obsession with looking trendy.

I thought they were a completely sh!t band, but got dragged along to a concert one night when I was a student on a free ticket, and live they were incredible. Still odn't like them much but one of those bands that are way better live.
