This may not be the best method, but it's reliable :

Pick a visual reference point approx 10 feet away, can be anything, a doorhandle, lightswitch etc.

Hold up a thumb at arms length (either hand - doesn't matter) so that the tip of your thumb obscures your reference point - it's important to have both eyes open at this point.

now without moving your thumb, cover your left eye with your spare hand

If your thumb is still obscuring your reference point; your right eye is dominant. if not, your left eye is dominant. If your thumb obscures your reference point regardless of which eye you cover; your eyes are equally dominant.

It's important if you're performing an activity where you use both eyes to 'aim', such as snooker, or archery (probably)

It may be important for other reasons and it may be connected to handedness.

Or an easier way:


Hold your hands flat in front of you palms facing out fingers toherther and thumbs out. Move hands together so that you make a triangle you can see through.

Focus on an object in front of you and move your hands towards your face while focussing on said object. You will eventually cover one eye and be looking through the triangle you have made with the other eye.

The one that is not covered is your dominant eye.
