So I was reflecting today that I have recently taken to paying £3 to get my shoes polished by the shoe shine guy, rather than bothering to clean them myself. How lazy is that?

Probably quite realistic, chubba, although I don't like to accept it (denial!). The thought of doing a permie job for half the dosh is not one that I enjoy.

Why should you not continue to be gainfully employed if you continue to update your skills (or indeed specialise in a niche field) throughout your 'career'?

You might be in an accident and lose the ability to work, or develop an illness or disease that incapacitates you. A family member or loved one may need long-term care that you might want to provide. The world economy could go tits up meaning there are no well paid jobs or that all jobs are outsourced to the likes of India. Imagine that!
Lots of things out of your control can happen in your life. Lovely to earn a really good wage but remember what it was like when you were a student or in first jobs at sub £20k per year. Those days could so easily return and that £3 would come in really handy then...
