My credit card limit is £1000 (yes I know it's low, it was my choice!). Now I thought that meant "if you try to go over that amount we'll stop you". But no, it apparently means "if you try to go over that amount, we'll let you, charge you a penalty, and then eventually stop you at some arbitrary point". They don't even try to pretend that that arrangement is in my favour in any way.

If anybody knows of a credit card company where "limit" really means "limit" please let me know and I'll switch immediately.
You may wish to switch over to a charge card (Diner's Club etc or the original Amex). However, be warned that they usually charge a monthly or annual fee and less and less places accept them now due to high merchant % charge.

EDIT: I do agree with you though - I had done the same thing in an attempt to limit the damage done by potential fraudsters and capped the card at £7k. It didn't work - they spent £20k in one week abroad. It took a little while to get that sorted, and a bit longer to get the interest charges and over limit fees cleared!
