      i have a loan with NOrthern Rock.

      If a company went bust what would happen with the money i owe them. Would it get written off or would i have to pay up the balance pretty quickly ?

        Have a look in your papers for a section called securitisation I think it called.
        I think you will find your bank have already sold your loan on to another bank, they will let you know who they are when the time comes
