Had an interview few hrs ago, role advertised was Apps DBA which is what I do, but from the interview all questions where based on Core DBA skills which is not my strength. At this stage I suggested we abort the interview so as not to waste anybody's time.

Am I wrong in doing this?

Surely, being an Apps DBA is an extension to being a core DBA? How can you possibly expect to do a half decent job without understanding the underlying technology?

I was just going to sya the same. Most apps DBA's started out as 'core' dba's. I don't see how you could be an app's dba without having a strong understanding of core Oracle DBA priniciples?

You can - the number of things that you are allowed to change and manipulate as a core DBA is huge compared to the number of things that Apps DBAs are allowed to change.

I did an upgrade course a while back - two core DBAs running the class, most students were Apps DBAs. The number of times that there was a blank look to questions that began "You know how you used to have to change..." simply because the vast majority of the attendees had never needed to make any of the configuration changes that a core DBA needs to do.
