"That's fine; any contractor that can't survive for an extra month without being paid is probably screwed in many other ways too."

I think that largely depends on the rate. If you are one of those £15 an hour guys, then going from paid weekly to monthly is a stretch, especially if it's one of those, do a month, then they wait a month before payment types - i.e. no money for 8 weeks
Rule Number 1 - Assuming that you have a valid contract in place always try to get your poo onto your timesheet, provided that the timesheet is valid for your current contract and covers the period of time that you are billing for.

          I preferred version 1!

Well.. Anyone who isn't on a good enough rate to justify the risk just shouldn't bother contracting. And anyone whose rate is OK should recognise that the risk is part of the bargain, and financially plan accordingly.

I think you might find that there are some out there where short term and badly paid contract work is the only thing open to them. Not everybody is a £400 a day person you know.

Well, maybe - but I don't know that sector, whatever it is.. Permanent jobs are much easier to get than contracts, IME. I'm not (usually) one of the £400/day people either, and I started on £20/hr - but that was still enough to be able to build up a buffer.
