I think Charing Cross is where they measure the distance other places are from London, and it would be a pain in the arse to have to re-calculate distances everytime the geographic centre of London moved.

OK, now I have Googled it. They must be VERY old maps - Pre 1290 - if the Beeb are to be believed.
