Surely any fine will be for travelling without a valid ticket - which is exactly what you did. It might seem unfair in that the whole thing could have been resolved by you being allowed to pay the full fair for the journey.

I was on the way out after work and had arranged to meet some old mates over in Bromley, so I get to London Bridge and the queue for a ticket was out the door, it would have taken me an hour to get a ticket and I was already late.

Anyway I went though the barrier behind someone and decided ill just buy a ticket at the other end, the whole station was mobbed and I have to change at Peckham and get another train. Stood on a sweaty train for 45mins, changed and finally got to Bromley South, whole journey had taken me 2.5 hours!

Anyway walk up to some fat bloke on the barrier and tell him I couldn't get a ticket at London Bridge and could I pay now for my journey. Anyway he spoke to me like I was a rapists or something, told me by rights he should charge me £20 fine. So I just said I would pay the £6 ticket from London bridge or nothing, no way was I in the mood after a 2.5 hour journey to fork out £20, so after some arguing he told me to goto and pay for a ticket.

Yeah I know I travelled without a ticket but I was honest and fully intended to pay for it, not like all the other people who do it daily and get away with it. Any he was just a jobsworth.
