Thanks guys (some of you anyway .

About what I thought. Not euthanasia (if you mean me rather than you) or a home, but:

    I do like Holland.
    SW France good choice too.
Canada: I've looked at this. I get 0 points (nul points) for age but my French is good so I should be OK there. Plausible pass mark even without a job offer.

I had wondered whether anybody would come up with one I hadn't thought of. I'd add Portugal (not Algarve), Slovenia, and a few others. Outside Europe????

Has anyone here got any idea what the rates/salaries are like in Canada?

I am also looking to get out of here and initially wanted to do US but the whole visa issues there are a nightmare.
I was also thinking of Sweden.

Aus would be alright but it is a bit far from family/friends over here.

If you don't like the way New Liebour is taking the UK I would avoid Sweden. I lived there for 4 years and had to leave. I didn't like the fact that I was paying high taxes to support everyone else. It sounds great at first - 12 months paid maternity, health care, pensions, etc etc but then you scratch below the surface.

I have a Swedish god daughter. She is in day care. Her parents want to pay more for day care and send her to a new school so that the class size will be reduced. They are not allowed. There is a max amount that the government allows you to pay for this!! Can you believe it.

              There are other examples too!

Although at the age of 56, the choice is somewhat limited

yes it is defo a commy country amazing to see

back to the subject in hand:

' But where could I go? I can think of answers that would work if I were younger, but I'm nearly 56: too old for NZ or Australia.

Don't have capital to buy house with. Dont have much savings either so desperately need to work for next 10 years on good pay. '

it is fear of being in a situation like that that motivates me to work hard now !

                  all the best
