Mary was really Mary of Bethany. Magdalen means High Tower in Greek. There was also a place called Magdala in old Palestine so that could also be the origin.
Iscariot means "man of Kerioth" in Hebrew.

You've got to be careful with these names as some of them are in the original Hebrew whereas some of them are old Greek as that would have been the first iteration of translation.

Just edited my post, there was also a place in Palestine called Magdala which could also be the origin. As for high tower, her name would have meant Mary [from the place with the] High Tower.

But don't those relate to surnames? Butcher, Baker etc are all from ocupations. Son of William became Williamson etc?

They've turned into surnames now, yes. But they weren't what we'd call surnames then. They were more like titles.
