Well worth it even when it's not snowing. And in some sensible countries, if you have an accident in the snow without them, your insurance company doesn't want to know you but the police do.

And there lies the problem....
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson
Why is it that nobody seems to be able to drive in the snow. When the snow has melted on the road it becomes wet and has the same properties as when it has been raining.
More like thin ice forms under snow that you can't see - I driven here once in the snow day like today (nice view in the garden now, maybe I will make snowman today) and it was hell - took like 3 hours to drive few miles from motorway to home and I was damn happy I did not crash car.

gentlemen, the fact remains, no matter how much snow the UK gets each year, you and your families would be safer in your cars in the winter months if you had a second set of wheels with winter tyres on your car, the cost is not so much as you only use them for a few months each year, but the grip and the safety are second to none, just because it is not the law does not mean it is not good for you
