Certainly a few years ago they were like that, and scrolling would look terrible, but the two Samsung LCD monitors I have are superb and I'm sure the new ones (these are over a year old) are even better. My new contract they've given me a 19" CRT, and it's horrible and it's hard to believe we put up with it for so long.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

I disagree. If you have a perfectly servicable CRT why buy now? Wait for HDTV to settle down and the 1080p TV's to come down in price. There is little point in me buying a swanky new plasma right now because I won't get any HDTV source to play on it.

Wait until they are broadcasting HDTV over freeview, or until sky/ntl/telewest/etc are broadcasting everything in true HDTV rather than one or two programs that are not an HDTV source being thrown accross the airwaves as HDTV.

As for the monitors, the only one I have seen so far that has made me want to get rid of my good old Iiyama 19" CRT is the new Benq 24" 1920 resolution LCD. The vast majority of LCD monitors have stupidly low resolutions maxing out at 1280*1024 with a 19" screen. I currently run my CRT at 1600*1200 and don't really want to drop the resolutions just so I can have a flat panel.

The stupid thing is that laptops have some very nice screens that can handle high resolutions, my laptop does 1920 * (whatever it is).

Anyway my advice would be wait for the content, and while you are waiting the technology will get better and prices will drop.

        You crusty old dinosaur you!

Look, if you are in the hunt for a new TV (lets say your old one just crapped itself while you were watching Barny) then why would you get a CRT when you can get an equally good, if not better, LCD monitor?

Why would you try and lug around a half ton 26inch CRT when you could get that 10kg LCD instead? Why would you get that CRT which takes up half your floor space when you can hang an LCD on your wall?

You see, apart from crusty old dinosaurs like yourself, it really doesnt make sense to be getting CRT now when you can get LCD tv's that are just as good for the same moolah (if not for less than what you paid for your last CRT).

        You know it makes sense!

I think you are perfectly right...why buy if you have a good CRT.

However IF your CRT has karked it...why would you get another CRT when you can get an LCD for the same money and the same quality?

I wouldn't hold your breath for HD over Freeview. I doubt it'll ever happen.

I don't know what the true situation is over on Sky, but as they mostly show US content and the US has been making HD for years (unlike merrie olde Englande) I think they do have a fair amount of HD content. I know the new series of Battlestar Galactica (about to start) will be HD, which could be reason enough.

It always amazes me that people who have spent £2K+ on an HD ready TV complain that the Sky HD service is a rip off at £10 per month extra.

BBC is going to be showing HD content and so are a couple of other players like NTL or what ever their name is?

I believe so. I wasn't saying it isn't technically possible, just that with limited bandwidth on DTT and with Freeview aimed at the poor and/or ignorant, I can't see it happening.
