It is a condition of EU membership. More specifically for reasons of the customs union, as any trade deal affects and are affected by customs agreements, WTO rules etc etc. Turkey can't negotiate their own deals either as they are a member of the customs union. They haven't complained though.

The original EEC was basically the customs union plus freedom of movement.

That said, the EU isn't shy about ejecting its toys from the pram. The rules are whatever the EC and CoM jolly well says they are. Assimilation 101.
Only if 67% or 100% of its members agree (depending on what it is about). The UK tend to agree with whatever the EU suggests, except for in a small number of cases, and therefore should not be surprised that the EU is just trying to uphold what the UK has already agreed to.

Guess that means we're trading with the US under WTO at the moment. How important are these deals really?

55% of my sales were to the US last month, 30% to Europe ( ex UK ). There's no tariffs involved.
Now try going to the US to deliver services there (and clearly state that intent at immigration), and then to the EU. Then tell us about the difference in experience.

As I said, it isn't possible to undermine the CCP through negotiation alone, but this only has meaning in an A50 context. There is nothing within the TFEU that is binding against talks, only against a formal, legal, commitment.

I think he/she is aware of this. Anyway, a trade deal alone doesn't necessarily improve that situation, although it often does. More importantly, the EU internal market has a rather different scope than a trade agreement, which is why we're leaving.

No, we are leaving because some Tory Scum feel it's an easy way for them to stay in power for next 5-10 years.

Nonsense. The easiest way for them to ensure that is to ensure that Jeremy Corbyn remains as the Leader of the Opposition.

Since Tory voters elect the next Labour leader that is not difficult. Labour is finished.
