Not only that - searching the internal document libraries and DMSs of big corporations is where the money is. Who want's to search the web - it's full of porn and idiot bloggers, nothing much of value there.
You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.

That's the problem with young 'uns. What do think will happen to Atw when he finally realises he's deluded. I reckon he's a reasonably competent programmer, so should be able to make a modest living as a permie somewhere.
Hard Brexit now!

The distributed approach to spidering and analysing huge amounts of documents is good, but rather than search the web, using an array of home PCs, he should maybe have come up with a concept of using racks full of blade servers to index and search all the data in an enterprise. If he'd had gone for that first, maybe he would have made some dosh. Too late now, too many players (including Google).Originally posted by sasguruThat's the problem with young 'uns. Here is Google's enterprise search offering: http://www.googlestore.com/appliance...ct.asp?catid=2Originally posted by bogeymanToo late now, too many players (including Google).
$30k for 500k documents in index
$50k for 1 mln document in index
They have higher end versions with up to 30 mln documents - my guess is that they cost well over $200k.
SKA currently keeps 600 mln page index on one server with 3x500 Gb disks, this will be upgraded to 5x750 GB disks in a couple of months, should be enough to store 1 bln indexed documents per box.
Indexing of such laughable quantity of documents like 1 mln does not require parallel processing, which incidentally SKA supports.
SKA Enterprise version is coming in Q1 2007, stay tuned - if you see SKA written with white chalk on your door then it is a sign that SKA night is coming...Comment

Google are not the only players here, but they have the name to trade on.
For the sort of enterprise you'd be targeting, track record is everything - they aren't bothered about saving a few $K.
Google have the strength in depth to support their solution and make sure it does what it says on the tin - who are you?
Also, G are moving beyound stand-alone search appliances to clusters.

Bullsh1t - when the price is $50k for 1 mln document and (say as example) $10k for 10 mln documents in SKA then it is a no brainer.Originally posted by bogeymanFor the sort of enterprise you'd be targeting, track record is everything - they aren't bothered about saving a few $K.
We are not talking about few hundred quid differnce here, ie: £199 vs £999, the difference will certainly be in tens of thousands which is not to be sniffed at.Comment
