Most Brits could not handle a "New Life in the Sun". That is because they are usually narrow-minded parochials that lack the imagination and experience to fully appreciate that actually living abroad as opposed to having a fortnight's holiday are often poles apart.
Most people that have actually spent sizeable amounts of time living and working abroad appreciate that, despite a number of pitfalls, this country still holds more for them than most foreign alternatives.
And the benefits of Blighty grow exponentially as you age too.

There are some beautiful places in the north, great cities, better standard of living, lower property prices etc."The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance." CiceroComment

You'd stay younger looking for longer if you emigrated to northern Finland. I bet property is cheap round there too.
Seriously, how much money does one need to become a Swiss citizen, property aside?
If I was emigrating, I'd probably favour somewhere round southern Switzerland near the Italian border, or perhaps just over it in northern Italy.Work in the public sector? Read the IR35 FAQ hereComment

Visiting MrsBP in the North, I am always depressed by the North. Mostly as you lose 20 minutes of sunlight per day.
My mother came from the North. Poor cow.Comment
