OP is worried about becoming rusty. Depending on your area you can practice in a home lab. Many of us have a collection of real or virtual kit at home. It doesn't have to be huge these days. Vmplayer gives you a Solaris / Linux / whatever environment in your PC. Even a raspberry pi can run many relevant technologies on a small scale.Comment

Having bench time is part and parcel, it is there to be enjoyed.
I have had all sort of time out, 6 months, 3 months, 1 year over the last 16 years, some chosen, some not, I certainly made sure I enjoyed the majority of it.
I like travelling, I don't know what you like to do with your free time.
If you can't face the bench time, maybe, going forward, continuing contracting may not be right for you, only you know that
Currently, on the bench myself and am looking forward to it, continuing, for the next couple of months, in the sun.

It's suprising how quickly you get a role where you are somewhere you don't want to leave.
