There was a stunning remark from some sports journo for USA Today who declared "if the USA isn't winning then nobody back home is going to be interested - it will be a disaster from an advertising revenue point of view".

Sums up the 'Merkin attitude pretty much.

No doubt Hollywood will make a film of the event in years to come where the USA win, and all the Yanks will believe it

You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.

And Darren Clarke, he of the recently deceased wife but played anyway and caused sobs all round, will be a yank.

Not only that, but "good ole' boy Darrin" [George Clooney] will be dying himself and will collapse into the arms of a sobbing Tiger [Will Smith] after expending his last ounce of effort holing the winning putt. The the stars and stripes will be fluttering in the background as a hoard of weeping, green-clad leprechauns bear his crumpled body away to the great 19th in the sky accompanied by the sound of bagpipes [fade to black - roll credits].

No at all. Haven't you ever heard of pink leprechauns?

Oh yes! Political correctness and the celebration of diversity has even invaded the domain of the little ermm... I mean 'differently sized' people.
