It also allows the Neo-Conservatives (a contridiction in terms if ever there was one) to continue to assist Project for a New American Century in achieving it's aims through controlling the world oil supply.

Prior to the Afghan War America was talking with the Taleban over the construction of an oil pipeline. The talks had stalled and it was suggested that a war may get the pipeline built. Then of course Iraq has natural oil reserves of it's own.
