Gas Installer is the way to go. Lots of work because loads of people have gas, only CORGI registered installers are able to do gas installations, so once you are qualified you are one of the 'elite' few and you can charge up to £80/hour for gas work.

Add in the ability to pocket large sums of cash in hand without paying tax on it and sorted. I sure a Gas Installer getting £80/hour can pocket more than your average IT contractor and have a lower tax burden.

Don't underestimate the earning potential and lightened tax burden of your average self employed manual labourer!!

Gas will run out in 50 yrs. Keep that in mind.

Plus what happens when overseas training centres offer CORGI registration for a tenner a pop?

Mark my words, there is no future here.

I remember the good old days of this site when people used to moan about serious contractor related issues like house prices and immigration. How times have changed!?

gas installers have to put holes in walls, brick them up, plaster, etc as well you know (unless they are the dodgy ones that connect the gas pipe only and then f off and leave a builder to come in and fix the mess that have made for thier pipes/boilers/fireplaces/etc.

I would still classify Gas installers, plumbers, and builders as in the manual labour trade.

Secondly the only way you can get CORGI registered is to pay CORGI which is not cheap (something in the region of £1000 a year if i remember correctly). You also have to has some gas fitting qualififcations and when you register with CORGI an inspector comes out and checks your work to make sure it is up to standard. If not your CORGI registration is revoked and CORGI keep the membership fee (great business plan).

As for gas running out in 50 years, who cares getting £80/hour for the next 50 years should set you up nicely for your wonderful state pension and you should be able to save up enough to retrain in 45 years time if you really feel the need

Being a gas installer shows a certain lack of ambition in my mind.

I don't see it as any more or less lacking than sitting in front of a computer coding all day.

The point I was trying to make is that you don't have to be in IT to earn a decent wage and I must admit that all these stupid adverts offering to train people in IT so that they can earn mega bucks really get my goat up. Some people are naturally pre-disposed to be good at IT and others aren't, no amount of night courses and training are going to make the incompetant suddenly competant, rich, and the lucky recipient of an OBE.....
