In most films before the 60s the cockney imitations were laughable, but the upper class accents impeccable.

These days the cockneys are spot on, and it's the upper class characters nobody can do.

The sad thing is that many of the older actors originally had cocker-ney accents, went to Hell-ecution schools to learn to talk proper and then when they did cocker-ney characters put on awful stereotype accents that bear very little relation to anything.

A case in point would be Barbara Windsor.
When she talks normally she sounds like an east end slapper trying very hard to hide her roots.
When she does Peggy she sounds almost as unrealistic as Dick Van Dyke.
But, as most know, she really is an east end girl - pretty friendly with the Krays and other ahem shady geezers.

I watched the first episode of EastEnders on iPlayer. I couldn't stop laughing at Lou Beale's accent - "Orf"


One day 2 of the drama teachers at school who were from the same part of Yorkshire but had a 20 year age gap explained why they spoke differently. When the older one went to drama classes and drama school a they all had to lose their accents and have BBC ones. If you couldn't lose your regional accent quickly then you had to pay for separate elocution classes if you wanted to get on stage. There as the younger one was allowed to talk how she liked. (Though the fact they were both drama teachers indicated they were sh*t actors.)
