World war 3 now imminent

I've always assumed that Mutually Assured Destruction would be sufficient to prevent a superpower-on-superpower war. But you still can't exclude:
a) Accidental launch
b) Launch in response to perceived in-coming missile that isn't what it appears
c) Loony operator/commander

And then there is still the small possibility of an ICBM/bomb being stolen/commandeered and launched by a group of terrorists.

But then again, I am not convinced that one ICBM/bomb due to any of the above would necessarily lead to all-out nuclear war.

Re: places to go - given that NZ has a land mass similar to the UK but less than 1/10th of the population, I am sure that they could take a few million. Of course, surviving a journey to the other side of the world under a nuclear winter/refugee scenario might be another issue!

Paul Craig Roberts is convinced that there are people in Washington and the Pentagon who have abandoned MAD and now think first-strike is survivable. If it's true, then we have a lot to worry about.

Allegedly a mushroom cloud was seen the other day, but it might just have been a direct hit on an ammo dump or worst case someone has got trigger happy with tactical nukes (Unlikely as you can't imagine Putin not whinging about when he could have an excuse to do some kind of camp pose for the cameras)

This was front page of RT.com this afternoon under the heading "viral". No mention of it being a nuke, just says they don't know what they hit. More of a "and we'll let you lot fill in the blanks" kind of thing. Much more eery.

A mushroom cloud is a distinctive pyrocumulus mushroom-shaped cloud of debris/smoke and usually condensed water vapor resulting from a large explosion. They are most commonly associated with nuclear explosions, but any sufficiently energetic detonation or deflagration will produce the same sort of effect. They can be caused by powerful conventional weapons, like vacuum bombs, including the ATBIP and GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb. Some volcanic eruptions and impact events can produce natural mushroom clouds.
