True. But I don't want to buy a house down south. Rent and earn some good money ..

If your wife doesn't like the thought of you working away, how does she like the idea of moving from an area where you can't beat the quality of life into a small rented accommodation that costs a fortune?

What skills have you got that are leading to poorly paid rates? It might be worth looking at those and seeing what you can do to command a better rate than the ones that you are getting at the moment. I've seen some tasty rates in Lancashire and Yorkshire (albeit in Doncaster), or you could always look at working from home if you have the right kind of skills.

I'm into Cloud AWS & DevOps with emphasis on Linux, Java. Very few contracts in the north for these skills.
