The reason why I ask is that I have applied for a Data Analyst role for a company in London and have previously had experience within the IT Security arena. I have done some Data Manipulation work within Excel in a previous role, so feel somewhat comfortable doing this role.

So I am wondering if anyone has made the move as a contractor to a new field altogether? I know the general advice is to go perm, get the experience and then go back to contracting, but am looking for general advice / guidance (other than don't do it and go perm).

    Ta in advance.
I have moved from a .Net Developer to being a Java Developer, then tried a bit of Scrum Master role for a short gig. I only knew academic Java, and did not have any commercial experience. As others have already said, you need to put in a lot more efforts, and work smart. Most of the people, can judge by your first day, what level you are, so do what you want, but just don't pretend to know all. My experience says that if you are honest enough from the onset, the transitions is much easier.

Good luck with your new endeavour.

    Dave.
