I am in the north too and you sound like in a similar situ as me where I am continuing BAU with work however most permenant employees look to have down tools and are talking continually about cuts, voluntary redundancy, etc.

I can see some real good people going and some deadwood potentially too but what I fear most is that the business will suffer if they only concentrate on consultation events and not transition i.e. what they continue with and what they let go. At the mo - its like some people just worry about worry and have stopped delivering value

...and let me guess, the cnuts at the top are busy securing their lifeboats or getting re-assigned to new positions as the new slimmer org structure is carved out in their favour. (Jobs for the boys)

Its not overly suprising that in the new org structure HR and Finance teams have not been hit much at all. Looks like the driver are looking after their allotments. There are many top men huddling into meetings to secure their ticket and no doubt make strides when we move to the new world, better to keep it sweet!

I contract solely with NHS organisations and have been on the bench for 6 weeks. Very little out there, so having to tap contacts, including pimps, and see how it goes.

The truth is, the 800 quids a day public sector contract gravy train has shuddered to a complete halt. Too many people for far too much time hung on to the public sector teat and milked it. Labour was only too interested in winning the election and so borrowed incessantly to keep this train running. If you can get out of public sector, get out now, it is bad for perm employees so it will be carnage for contractors.

I am due to roll off my project in the new year. Project is going well but the environment is ever changing. I would like to "get out" as being up north is killing me in terms of social life and im knackered at the weekends when I have one heck of a commute back. I want to take a month off too in the coming months therefore in the predicament where if I was to start somewhere new they wouldnt be keen on me taking a month off straight away.

Talking to another contractor today the market is dire at the moment in Public Sector. If you don't have the background don't bother... its turning into very similar to finance without the lucrative rates! Atleast the people you work with are nice and they genuinely do care when try to deliver a service. I am talking about specialists in the public sector trade i.e. nurses!

I'm wondering if the inevitable cuts in the public sector are already starting to have the effect of clogging up the CV database websites (Jobserve, Jobsite, etc). Things dont seem quite as rosy as I was expecting them to be.

We are just coming out of a bad period looking for work - August is notoriously slow due to personal holidays etc and decisions being put off. Judging by the calls in recent days things have picked up in early September, however it's definitely slower than I've been used to in the past (I've never actually been looking at this time of the year so can't make an informative comparison).

The defence industry is definitely fscked though.

Lie? We're not all part of the 'gis a job' brigade, desperate to drag a contact out as long as possible just for the 'MONEY'.
